Oster CKSTBR9050 Express Bake Bread Maker

I'm not totally enthralled with this machine. It suffers from the same defect that other bread machines have: they create these weird cubes of bread with nasty crunchy bottoms and sides.

Unlike the first reviewer, I didn't have any problem with the paddle embedding itself in the bread.

I tried using the machine to "do the whole thing" (i.e. make dough and then bake it into bread) a couple of times and then stopped. I just can't cope with bread machine crust. It's nasty...gritty, crumbly, hard, crunchy. Maybe if I were willing to experiment and make 50 loaves, i'd find some combination of recipe/setting that would give a great loaf/great crust. I'm not that patient.

I ended up throwing away the instruction/recipe book. There are far better recipes out there on various websites.

I only use it now for creating bread dough. It seems to do a decent job of that. It takes 90 minutes, and when you're done, you take the dough outta the machine and do whatever with it (depends on the recipe you're using). I mostly make a simple French-style baguette, and it's quite good in baguette or "roll" format. Have had multiple failures at making real Italian-style bread...edible but unsatifactory.

makes useful dough (easy)

Not loving the actual bread at all. I like the dough. But I'm not sure if that's THIS machine's fault or if it's ALL bread machines.

For the $30 or whatever I paid for this machine, I'm happy. 3 stars for "quality of bread" 5 stars for "a lot of machine for not much money"

With about ten minutes of work, I can have fresh bread every day and it costs maybe $0.75 to make enough bread for 2-3 people. I miss the SF Bay area, where "artisan" bread was a way of life. The bread that comes out of this thing can't compete with that kind of bread, but it's better than Safeway baguettes.
